Sembcorp Energy UK Ltd. has achieved commercial operation at three battery storage sites in the U.K. with combined capacity of 60 MW.
The projects are in Asfordby in Leicestershire, and Ellesmere Port and Runcorn in Cheshire. The company has now completed half of its 120-MW battery storage pipeline, slated to be fully completed in 2020, according to an Oct. 21 news release from Sembcorp, whose total power portfolio now stands at 973 MW.
Developed in partnership with Fluence, the three sites will feed the output to National Grid PLC's transmission system to avoid possible outages.
Sembcorp Energy UK is owned by Sembcorp Industries Ltd. Fluence is a joint venture of AES Corp. and Siemens Ltd.
