Exelon closes Boston LNG import terminal acquisition

Exelon Generation Co. LLC completed its acquisition of ENGIE North America Inc.'s LNG import terminal, to be used to supply fuel to its Mystic River 8 and 9 plants while they remain operating.

With the acquisition, the Exelon Corp. subsidiary will now own and manage the operations of the Everett LNG Facility in Everett, Mass. Constellation Energy Group Inc., an Exelon company, will be responsible for purchasing and selling LNG to gas utilities, marketers and other market participants throughout New England, according to Sept. 30 news release.

Exelon Generation in March announced that it plans to retire its 2,000-MW natural gas- and oil-fired Mystic Generating Station in Middlesex, Mass., as the company looks to stop operations on its Mystic units 7, 8, 9 and the Jet unit on June 1, 2022. Operations on units 1 through 6 are already decommissioned. Exelon said it may reconsider retiring the Mystic units if anticipated ISO-NE market rule changes are timely filed and approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
