Apex Power plans 1,100-MW gas plant in Ohio

Apex PowerGroup LLC plansto construct a 1,100-MW, natural gas-fired power plant in Ohio.

The Guernsey Power Station, which would be located in ValleyTownship in southern Guernsey County, would use two natural gas-firedcombustion turbine generators and one steam turbine generator, the company saidApril 1. The project would supply power to areas of Ohio,Pennsylvania and West Virginia that fall within the area, thecompany said.

Apex Power said it has applied for an interconnection andplans to submit permit applications to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agencyand the Ohio Power Siting Board this summer or fall. Construction of the newplant could begin as early as 2018, with an in-service date of summer 2020,pending secure financing.

The plant will use natural gas produced from the Utica andMarcellus shales, according to Apex Power.

The company said it met with Guernsey County commissioners,who voiced initial support for the project, citing potential property and salestax revenues and positive economic impact on businesses that would support thepower station. Public meetings will be held in the coming months,as required by the Ohio Power Siting Board.

According to SNL Energy data, seven natural gas-firedgeneration projects are in various stages of development and construction in Ohio,including ArcLight CapitalHoldings LLC subsidiary EasternGeneration LLC's Rolling Hills Generating CC and 's LordstownGenerating Station. One of the projects, FirstEnergy Corp. subsidiary 's Norton EnergyStorage, has been postponed.
