Dominion Energy Inc. is seeking the approval of the Virginia State Corporation Commission for a series of energy efficiency programs, according to an Oct. 4 news release. If approved by the commission, the programs are expected to start in about a year.

The filing was made in compliance with the Grid Transformation & Security Act of 2018 which requires Dominion Energy Virginia, known legally as Virginia Electric and Power Co., to allot a minimum of $870 million in energy efficiency programs for the next 10 years.

The act, which was signed into law in March, also calls for 3,000 MW of new solar and onshore wind development by 2022, and the deployment of 2,000 MW of offshore wind by 2028.

In July, Dominion Energy Virginia filed its first set of plans under the Grid Transformation and Security Act. The company also sought approval for the addition of 240 MW of solar projects in Virginia in a separate filing.

Last Oct. 2, Gov. Ralph Northam released the 2018 Virginia Energy Plan, which outlines the state's energy policy over the next decade.
