FERC staff finishing environmental review of Northern Natural expansion

FERC staff plans to issue the environmental review ofNorthern Natural GasCo.'s proposed Northern Lights 2017 pipeline expansion project byNov. 9.

In a Sept. 26 notice, the commission released the staff'splanned schedule for the environmental assessment. Cooperating federal agencieswould have until Feb. 7, 2017, to complete their own work on the project review.

Northern Natural applied for the project June 24. At the time, thecompany requested that FERC approve the project by Feb. 17, 2017, so it couldput the project in service by November 2017. It estimated the total cost of theproject at approximately $44 million.

Northern Natural, a subsidiary of , would use theproject to deliver approximately 76,000 Dth/d of incremental gas to customersin Minnesota.

In order to provide the additional transportation capacity,the project would include 2 miles of 8-inch-diameter pipeline loop in SherburneCounty, Minn., 2.8 miles of 12-inch-diameter pipeline loop in Isanti County,Minn., and an additional 15,900-horsepower compressor unit at Northern Natural'sFaribault compressor station in Rice County, Minn.

The project would be part of an ongoing effort to expandcapacity on the Northern Natural pipeline system. The increased capacity wouldenable the system to meet expected growth demands and requirements through2026. (CP16-472)
