US coal rail traffic up 1.4% in latest week

Total U.S. coal rail traffic for the week ended Oct. 6 climbed 1.4% year over year to 88,939 carloads, according to data from the Association of American Railroads.

Year-to-date coal rail traffic fell 0.9% through the week, while total rail traffic for the week increased 1.2% year over year to 554,238 carloads and intermodal units.

BNSF Railway Co. coal shipment volumes clocked in at 40,438 carloads in the week ended Oct. 6, rising 1.3% from the previous week's 39,909 carloads and up less than 1% compared to 40,231 carloads in the year-ago week.

Union Pacific Corp.'s coal shipment volumes this week were at 22,144 carloads, increasing 4.8% from 21,125 carloads the previous week and rising 5.7% compared to the previous year's weekly volume of 20,944.

Eastern railroad CSX Transportation Inc.'s shipment volumes of coal stood at 16,935 carloads, slipping 9.4% from the previous week's 18,689 carloads but posting an increase of 5.0% compared to 16,136 carloads the same week in the previous year.

Norfolk Southern Corp.'s coal shipment volumes totaled 17,794 carloads for the week, gaining less than 1% from the previous week's 17,791 carloads but falling 12.6% compared to 20,366 carloads the same week a year ago.

Kansas City Southern Railway Co.'s latest weekly coal shipment volume was 2,931 carloads, falling 6.3% from 3,127 carloads the previous week. The railroad serves 10 U.S. states and Mexico.

Data collected by S&P Global Market Intelligence from railroads indicate both cars originated on their lines during the week and cars received from a connecting railroad during the same week.
