Facebook Inc. is designing its own chips to improve analysis and filtering of live videos, Bloomberg News reported May 25.
The homegrown chip design is part of the social media giant's efforts to immediately take down disturbing content on its platform, such as footage of users committing suicide or murder.
According to Facebook AI Research Director Yann LeCun, the move is aimed at making the process of filtering real-time footage "more energy-efficient," because current methods of monitoring videos require "a huge amount of compute power."
LeCun said the chips will not be completely new for Facebook, as it has previously ventured into hardware.
