Schurz Communications Inc. acquired Hiawatha Broadband Communications Inc. serving communities in southeast Minnesota.

The acquisition expands Schurz's broadband operations in growing communities, the company said Feb. 28. Schurz plans on maintaining local management. Hiawatha will continue to be based in Winona, Minn., and operate under the Hiawatha Broadband Communications name.

Hiawatha operates an advanced fiber optic network serving gigabit broadband, telephone, and video service with a selection of more than 300 channels, video on demand and local high school and college sporting events produced by HBC Studios.

Schurz Communications Inc. is a Mishawaka, Ind.-based news and information company that consists of broadband, newspaper publishing, cloud managed services and digital media operations.
