Microsoft Corp. has agreed to purchase solar power in Singapore under a deal with solar energy system operator Sunseap Group, the companies said.
The tech giant will buy 100% of the renewable output generated from Sunseap's new 60-megawatt rooftop solar project over a 20-year period. The tech giant will use the energy output to power its data centers in Singapore, which support cloud services such as Microsoft Azure and the Office 365 suite.
The deal, financial details of which were not disclosed, is touted as Microsoft's first renewable energy deal in Asia and its third international clean energy initiative.
In 2017, the company struck a 15-year deal to buy wind energy from GE's new 37-MW Tullahennel wind farm in County Kerry, Ireland. Dutch energy provider Nuon also agreed to supply wind energy to Microsoft's data center in the Netherlands over 10 years.
Microsoft is aiming to power 50% of its global data center load with renewable energy in 2018.
