First 5G specifications approved

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project, or 3GPP, an industry body that governs cellular standards, approved the first-ever 5G specification at a meeting in Lisbon.

The completion of the first 5G New Radio, or 5G NR, standard has set the stage for the global mobile industry to start full-scale development of 5G NR for large-scale trials and commercial deployments as early as in 2019.

Meanwhile, SK Telecom Co. Ltd., Telstra Corp. Ltd., NTT DOCOMO, AT&T Inc., Sprint Corp., T-Mobile US Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., Ericsson, Orange SA, Vodafone Group Plc, and QUALCOMM Inc.'s Qualcomm Technologies Inc. successfully demonstrated a multi-vendor interoperability connection that complies with the Non-Standalone 5G NR global 3GPP standard.
