PJM expects to have ample power resources for winter

PJM Interconnection said it has sufficient resources to meet forecast demand for electricity this winter.

The grid operator said in a Nov. 29 press release that it expects to have 184,926 MW of resources to meet the forecast peak demand of 135,526 MW. Last winter, owing to milder-than-average weather, the peak of 130,689 MW was reached on Dec. 15, 2016. By comparison, the regional transmission organization's all time winter peak was 143,295 MW set on Feb. 20, 2015.

In its forecast, PJM said that a weak La Niña should develop, leading to a colder winter than the last two years, and that the unusually cool weather this past August was caused by a southward shift in the polar vortex. The RTO adds that if the trend continues, the risk of periods of arctic cold will be greater. In addition, above-average precipitation is projected for the Great Lakes region and below-average precipitation is expected in the south.
