Huawei introduces Mate 30 handsets without Google apps

Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. on Sept. 19 unveiled its Mate 30 smartphone series at an event in Munich, Germany.

Available in 4G and 5G variants, the Mate 30 handsets run on Huawei's new Kirin 990 chipset. Some of the Mate 30 features include an integrated quad-camera, an ultra-curved screen, invisible virtual keys that replace the side volume buttons and wireless charging.

The Mate 30 sports a 6.62-inch display, while the Mate 30 Pro has a 6.53-inch screen. Pricing starts at €799 for Huawei Mate 30, €1,099 for the Mate 30 Pro 4G variant, and €1,199 for the Mate 30 Pro 5G variant.

While the devices will operate on an open-source version of Google LLC's Android, Mate 30 phones will not come preinstalled with Google apps such as Gmail, YouTube LLC or Play store due to Huawei's inclusion in the U.S. government's entity list, according to CNBC. The Chinese company will instead offer its own EMUI10 operating system and its own app store, which Huawei confirmed will allow downloads of social media apps Facebook Inc., Instagram LLC and WhatsApp Inc.

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's consumer business group, said the new Mate 30 phones will "probably" be available in Europe beginning October.
