REIT Replay: Faded fears

The broader markets and real estate investment trusts started the week on a high note Monday, Aug. 14, as tensions eased over a potential conflict between the U.S. and North Korea.

The MSCI US REIT Index (RMZ) rose 1.71% to 1,156.65 and the SNL US REIT Equity Index added 1.71% to 314.43. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ticked up 0.62% to 21,993.71, while the S&P 500 gained 1.00% to end the day at 2,465.84.

Digital Realty Trust Inc.'s and DuPont Fabros Technology Inc.'s shareholders are slated to vote on the companies' proposed merger in separate meetings Sept. 13. The all-stock deal is expected to close in the second half.

Digital Realty shares climbed 2.71% to $114.85, while DuPont shares jumped 2.93% to $62.20.

Invitation Homes Inc. and Starwood Waypoint Homes disclosed termination conditions and proposed termination fees for their proposed stock-for-stock merger

Shares of Invitation Homes surged 4.93% to close at $23, and Starwood Waypoint shares popped 3.60% to $36.87.

Global Medical REIT Inc. tapped Robert Kiernan to succeed Donald McClure as CFO and treasurer, effective Aug. 23.

Global Medical REIT shares increased to 2.89%, closing at $9.25.

Equity Commonwealth sold six properties across four states in two deals totaling $216.1 million. The first deal comprises a five-property, 1 million-square-foot portfolio spread across Maryland, Minnesota and Missouri, while the second deal involves a 640,000-square-foot office property in Boca Raton, Fla.

Equity Commonwealth shares gained 0.36% to close the day at $30.56.

Hersha Hospitality Trust landed a $475 million senior unsecured credit facility that may be further increased to $875 million. The term loan under the facility will be used in part to refinance roughly $210.5 million of existing debt.

Hersha shares climbed 2.33%, closing at $18.47.

Plymouth Industrial REIT Inc. scored a $35 million senior secured revolver that is expandable up to $75 million and matures in August 2020. The company recently made its first acquisition post-IPO.

Plymouth Industrial shares inched 0.88% higher, ending the day at $17.20.
