Westar, Great Plains set shareholder meetings for merger approval

Westar Energy Inc. and Great Plains Energy Inc. will hold special shareholder meetings Nov. 21 to secure approval for their $14 billion merger of equals.

Great Plains will hold its meeting at 10 a.m. CT at One Kansas City Place, 1200 Main Street, Kansas City, Mo. Westar Energy will hold its meeting at the same time, at 818 S. Kansas Avenue, Topeka, Kan.

The boards of directors of both companies have already recommended shareholders to vote "for" each of the applicable proposals relating to the transaction, according to an Oct. 10 press release.

The SEC declared effective the registration statement containing the companies' joint proxy statement/prospectus Oct. 10.

Both Westar and Great Plains plan to close the merger in the first half of 2018. The companies have filed a merger application with Kansas Corporation Commission. They also need approvals from the Missouri Public Service Commission, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
