EDF to install 30,000 MW of solar capacity in France by 2035

French utility EDF Group on Dec. 11 launched a solar power plan with the aim of building 30,000 MW of installed solar capacity in France by 2035.

"The Solar Power Plan is of an unparalleled scale and marks a real turning point in EDF's development of solar power capacity," EDF Chairman and CEO Jean-Bernard Lévy said in a statement. In 2015, the company declared a goal of doubling its installed renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The proposed plan is also in line with France's goal of rebalancing its energy mix through the expansion of renewable energy capacity. As of June 30, France had a total of 7,400 MW of installed solar capacity, EDF said.

To achieve the target, EDF plans to use a variety of sites it already controls for the new solar facilities, including near nuclear power plants, the reconversion of industrial wasteland or closed locations, development of floating solar plants on hydroelectric sites, and internal resources. It will also involve industrial and financial partners.
