UAW turns down GM's latest offer but talks continue

The United Auto Workers union again turned down the latest package proposal submitted by General Motors Co., with the labor group saying that the new offer basically repeated the one that it had previously rejected.

According to an email correspondence between UAW Vice President Terry Dittes and GMNA Labor Relations Vice President Scott Sandefur, which has been published on UAW's website, the union presented a proposal package to GM on Oct. 5 that addressed 35 hourly proposals and three salaried proposals.

On Oct. 6, GM responded to the offer by reverting back to the proposal UAW previously rejected and "made little change." The automaker also did not explain why it could not accept UAW's offer.

"[After] making some progress on important issues a couple of days ago, the company has shown an unwillingness to fairly compensate the great workforce of the UAW," Dittes said in a letter to union members. "These negotiations have taken a turn for the worse."

Dittes added that the union will continue to negotiate with GM.
