Report: MásMóvil, others in race to acquire BT's Spanish unit

Mobile operator MásMóvil Ibercom SA is one of four companies still in the running to acquire British Telecom's Spanish unit, Telecompaper reported, citing sources mentioned by Expansión.

The other bidders for BT España reportedly include venture capital firm Carlyle Group LP, private equity firm Portobello Capital Gestión SGEIC SA and an unnamed company. The remaining bidders were asked to submit binding offers by mid-October.

Orange SA-owned Orange Espagne SAU was also eyeing BT España, but BT considered the telco's initial bid too low. The U.K. operator raised concerns about selling its unit to its main market rival in Europe, according to the report.

The sale of BT España is in line with BT's restructuring of its global services division. British Telecom is reportedly in exclusive talks to potentially sell its corporate business in Ireland to Mayfair Equity Partners LLP. The company is also considering divesting about £100 million of telecom infrastructure assets in the Netherlands.
