Altice's mobile service; US states' tech probe; Huawei's 5G chip

Top news

* Altice USA Inc. unveiled a $20-per-month mobile service for customers in its 21-state footprint Sept. 5, an aggressively priced offering that executives said would allow for profitability due in part to the company's blended approach to its mobile virtual network operator agreement with Sprint Corp. Altice's mobile service will operate on a mix of cellular infrastructure the company launched itself and that owned by Sprint.

* Two bipartisan groups of U.S. state attorneys general are set to launch separate antitrust investigations into tech giants Google LLC and Facebook Inc., The Wall Street Journal reports, citing sources. The investigation against the Alphabet Inc. unit will be led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, while New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, will lead the probe against Facebook.

* Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. introduced a new 5G processor for its mobile devices, called Kirin 990, CNBC reports. The processor will power the Chinese company's upcoming flagship smartphone, Mate 30, which will be released later this month. The development signals Huawei's stance to lessen dependence on U.S. chipmakers, such as Qualcomm Inc., amid the ongoing trade dispute between the two countries.

Internet & OTT

* Facebook rolled out its Facebook Dating service in the U.S. for users 18 years or older. In a blog post, Nathan Sharp, product manager at Facebook Dating, said users can choose to opt into Facebook Dating to create a profile. Users will then be linked to others who also opted in and will be allowed to search for a match via common interests, groups, events and other connections.

* In other Facebook news, the social media giant recruited a pair of lobbyists to aid the launch of Libra cryptocurrency and to win over lawmakers that are threatening to hinder the launch, Bloomberg News reports. The lobbyists roped in by Facebook are William Hollier, president of Hollier Associates LLC, and Michael Williams of the Williams Group.

* Facebook struck a video partnership with several news outlets, including France's Le Monde, Germany's Axel Springer SE and Sweden's Expressen, to create original content for Facebook Watch, according to an official blog post. Facebook will let the publishers experiment with new formats, engage new audiences and build sustainable revenue streams on the Watch platform.

* Apple Inc. rolled out its music streaming service Apple Music on the web for users, who prefer using a browser instead of an app, Bloomberg News reports. The web version is an early beta test and it is similar to the Apple Music app, the company said.

* Netflix Inc. unveiled a new feature designed to alert members about new and upcoming programming on the streaming service. The new Latest tab, which will be on the left-side navigation bar, will list titles into three "New This Week," "Coming This Week" and "Coming Next Week" categories, according to a blog post.

* Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to develop drama series titled "Mr. Corman" for Apple, Variety reports, citing sources. The Hollywood actor will star in, write and executive produce the series, which is currently in works at the company.

* The National Football League signed a content and advertising deal with Reddit Inc. The deal will link NFL communities through year-round "Ask Me Anything" content series as well as first-to-market advertising opportunities for brands.

* Writer, director and producer Patty Jenkins entered in a multiyear overall deal to produce new series exclusively at Netflix. Jenkins is known for directing Warner Bros. Pictures and DC's "Wonder Woman" and her debut Oscar-winning feature "Monster."

Technology

* Private equity firm Silver Lake Partners will make a new $1 billion investment in Motorola Solutions Inc. and settle its outstanding $800 million aggregate principal investment one year ahead of its maturity. Under the terms of the investment, Silver Lake will purchase $1 billion of 1.75% convertible senior unsecured notes due 2024. The notes will have an initial conversion price of $203.50 per share.

* Walt Disney Co. teamed up with Lenovo Group Ltd. to launch "Lenovo Mirage AR headset," Variety reports. The device is dependent on a consumer's phone, and an app that can be downloaded for free, to super-impose pictures over their view of the real world.

* Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon said the company is still waiting to hear from the U.S. Commerce Department regarding its license to sell technology to Huawei, which has been placed on a U.S. entity list, CNBC.com reports. Amon said he is optimistic that the uncertainty surrounding Huawei will be resolved soon.

The day ahead

Early morning futures indicators pointed to a higher opening for the U.S. market.

In Asia, the Hang Seng rose 0.66% to 26,690.76, and the Nikkei 225 rose 0.54% to 21,199.57.

In Europe, around midday, the FTSE 100 was down 0.8% to 7,265.62, and the Euronext 100 was down 0.18% to 1,080.49.

On the macro front

The employment situation report, the quarterly services survey and the Baker-Hughes Rig Count report are due out today.
