The week in OTT: Amazon patents 'AmazonTube'; Monday Night Football on mobile

The week in over-the-top provides a recap of recent news related to streaming initiatives in the U.S. from various networks and platforms.

* Amazon.com Inc. may be planning to launch its own video streaming service as the company's feud with Google Inc. over accessing YouTube content on Amazon's devices continues to escalate. The retail giant submitted an application to trademark "AmazonTube." According to the application filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office by Amazon Technologies Inc., AmazonTube is described to be an Amazon-owned service that will stream visual and audiovisual content and can be played across a variety of different devices.

* Consolidated Communications Holdings Inc. struck an agreement with sports-focused live streaming TV service fuboTV. Consolidated customers can stream more than 65 live channels via fuboTV apps on devices running on Apple Inc.'s iOS and Google's Android operating system, Apple TV, Roku Inc. devices, Chromecast and Amazon.com's Fire TV, the company said Dec. 21. After a free trial, Fubo Premier is available at an introductory rate of $19.99 for the first two months.

* Walt Disney Co.'s majority-owned ESPN (US) struck a deal to let users stream Monday Night Football on mobile phones. The expanded mobile rights deal with the National Football League also includes NFL highlights and extends through the duration of ESPN's existing NFL agreement, according to a Dec. 20 post on ESPN MediaZone. The deal will kick off with the NFL Wild Card weekend of Jan. 6, 2018, to Jan. 7, 2018, and Pro Bowl on Jan. 29, 2018.

* Netflix Inc. placed a second-season order for German original production "Dark," the company said Dec. 20. The series created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese is a family saga with a supernatural twist.

* Netflix has already ordered a sequel to "Bright," the action-fantasy film starring Will Smith that became available exclusively on the streaming platform on Dec. 22, Bloomberg News reported Dec. 20.

* In More NFL news, Comcast Corp.'s NBCUniversal Media LLC secured rights from the league to stream Sunday Night Football through NBC (US)' TV Everywhere offering on all mobile devices, starting with the 2018 season. Also, NBCU will extend the authenticated streaming rights to its cable, satellite, and telco partners, as well as virtual MVPDs, according to a Dec. 18 news release. The deal also includes national advertising and local affiliate advertising.

In other platform news

* Sports-focused streaming TV service fuboTV further expanded its local TV coverage with six new CBS (US) affiliates. The new CBS stations offered by fuboTV are: KHOU in Houston; KPHO in Phoenix; WGCL in Atlanta; WOIO in Cleveland; WTSP in Tampa/St. Petersburg, Fla.; and WUSA in Washington, D.C.

* Amazon.com's video game streaming service Twitch unveiled a new game show, called "Stream On," according to a Dec. 19 official blog post. Set to premiere in March 2018, the new show from Twitch Studios will show up-and-coming streamers competing against each other to win a grand prize of $5,000 a month for a year to boost their streaming career.

* Verizon Communications Inc.'s go90 premiered "Dear Basketball," the animated version of Kobe Bryant's poem, on go90 and across Verizon's Yahoo Sports, AOL and Complex platforms, the company said Dec. 18. "Dear Basketball" recently won Best 2D Hand-drawn Animation and the Special Jury Prize at the 2017 World Animation Celebration.
