Cadent Gas Ltd, in partnership with Northern Gas Networks Ltd., has completed a pilot project in the U.K. to inject zero-carbon hydrogen into an existing gas network for the heating of homes and buildings.

The project, installed at Keele University in England, will feed into 100 homes and 30 faculty buildings at the university, according to a Jan. 2 news release.

When burned, hydrogen produces just heat and water, rather than carbon emissions. If a 20% hydrogen blend is implemented across the U.K., it could save about 6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year, the news release said.
