Toyota to expand production facilities for fuel cell vehicle components

Toyota Motor Corp. said May 24 that it will expand production sites in Japan in anticipation of increased sales of fuel cell electric vehicles after 2020.

The Japanese automaker said it expects annual worldwide sales of fuel cell electric vehicles to rise to at least 30,000 after 2020, compared with the current figure of 3,000.

The company plans to build a new facility at its Honsha plant in Toyota city to mass-produce fuel cell stacks, and also add a new production line in its existing Shimoyama plant in Miyoshi city to make high-pressure hydrogen tanks. The components to be manufactured at both plants are key to the zero-emissions electric vehicles.

The new production operations are scheduled to begin around 2020.

Toyota is also looking to broaden the availability of its Mirai fuel cell sedan, which is currently sold in 11 countries including the U.S. and Japan, to new markets including Australia, Canada, China and the United Arab Emirates.
