Nexus-connected gas project gets FERC approval to begin construction

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission allowed Texas Eastern Transmission LP to begin construction on its natural gas project in Ohio to feed the larger 1.5-Bcf/d Nexus pipeline.

In a Dec. 19 authorization to proceed with construction of the Texas Eastern Appalachian Lease, or TEAL, project, FERC confirmed receipt of all required federal permits.

The TEAL project would include 4.4 miles of 36-inch-diameter loop, a short 30-inch-diameter interconnecting pipeline, a new compressor station and modifications to another compressor station.

TEAL intends to lease 950,155 Dth/d of capacity to the Nexus Gas Transmission LLC pipeline project, which would carry Appalachian gas supplies through Ohio and Michigan to Ontario.

FERC separately issued variance approvals for the Nexus project, including an extension of a permanent easement at the Hanoverton compressor station. The commission previously withheld construction authorization for the TEAL project, as well as certain portions of the Nexus project, when it issued authorization for the Nexus project to begin construction activities Oct. 11.

The Nexus pipeline would include 256.6 miles of 36-inch-diameter greenfield pipeline construction, four new compressor stations and an interconnect to Kinder Morgan Inc.'s Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. Nexus is a joint venture of Enbridge Inc. and DTE Energy Co.

The commission issued a certificate order for the projects in late August. (FERC dockets CP16-22, CP16-23, CP16-24, CP16-102)
