Unit 1 of Southern Co.'s Hatch nuclear plant returns to service

The monthlong refueling and maintenance outage at unit 1 of the Edwin I. Hatch nuclear facility was completed on March 4, and the plant returned to service, according to a March 6 news release.

During the outage, Southern Co. and Global Nuclear Fuel LLC installed accident tolerant fuel test assemblies developed by the U.S. Department of Energy, and the plant's systems and components were also upgraded.

The facility's unit 2 continued to generate power during the refueling. Each unit of the nuclear power plant needs new fuel every 24 months.
