General Motors Co. and Honda Motor Co. Ltd. entered into an agreement to develop a new battery system to ramp up both companies' plans for all-electric vehicles.
In a June 7 announcement, the auto manufacturers said they will build advanced chemistry battery components, including the cell and module. The battery, which the companies said is mainly for the North American market, will come in smaller packaging and is expected to deliver higher energy density and faster charging capabilities.
As part of the agreement, Honda will source the battery modules from General Motors.
The new collaboration builds on a previous electrification partnership between the two companies, which has led to the creation of a manufacturing joint venture to produce an advanced hydrogen fuel cell system beginning around 2020.
The move is in line with the companies' goal to reduce emissions and work toward a more sustainable society, according to the release.
