Midday Thursday: Bank stocks give back some gains

Followingyesterday's positive close,bank and thrift stocks headed south during early trading on Thursday, Oct. 6,amid the latest jobless claims data.

The SNL U.S.Bank Index was down 0.32% to 421.23, and the SNL U.S. Thrift Index was down 0.57%to 824.48. Around midday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.11% to18,260.15, the S&P 500 gained 0.05% to 2,160.78, and the Nasdaq compositeindex lost 0.10% to 5,310.64.

The LaborDepartment reported today that the advance figure for seasonally adjustedinitial claims for the week ended Oct. 1 was 249,000, down from last week'slevel of 254,000. The four-week moving average was 253,500, compared to the previousperiod's 256,000.

was up0.10% to $45.04, while JPMorganChase & Co., Bankof America Corp. and Citigroup Inc. were all down slightly.

's stock was up0.40% to $69.55 around midday. The Lafayette, La.-based company disclosed aftermarkets closed Wednesday that it invested $1.5 million in Liberty Financial Services Inc., which translates into aless than 5% stake in New Orleans-based Liberty.

In thethrift space, New York CommunityBancorp Inc. was down 0.42% to $14.09, fell 0.48% to$14.46, BofI HoldingInc. decreased 1.14% to $22.57.
