Venezuela's Socialist Party Deputy Diosdado Cabello announced that a military base near the central city of Valencia was attacked by military rebels. Troops have already controlled the situation, Cabello said via his Twitter account August 6.
Reuters reported that a video was released showing a group of men in military uniform calling for a broad uprising against President Nicolas Maduro.
The news came a day after the country's new constituent assembly unanimously agreed to remove State Prosecutor Luisa Ortega from her job. Ortega had started an investigation into allegations that the country's electoral council rigged turnout figures in the July 30 election for a constituent assembly.
The new constituent assembly could rewrite the constitution, dissolve state institutions and give vast powers to Maduro's ruling Socialist Party.
