Comedy Central renews 'South Side'; Apple TV+ pulls plug on Richard Gere series

The Program Guide highlights recent programming announcements from various networks and online video platforms in the U.S.

Traditional TV

* "Ricky Zoom," a CGI-animated action-adventure series, will premiere on Nickelodeon (US) on Sept. 9, the network said. The series, which consists of 26 half-hour episodes, follows Ricky, a little red rescue bike, and his bike buddies as they roam around the Wheelford community helping others and trying out new stunts.

* Nickelodeon original animated series "The Casagrandes" will premiere Oct. 14. The show, a spinoff of "The Loud House," follows 11-year-old Ronnie Anne, who moves to the city with her mom and older brother to live with the Casagrandes, according to a news release.

* "Watchmen," a series based on a graphic novel with the same name, will premiere exclusively on HBO (US) on Oct. 20. The show, which is set in an alternate history where vigilantes are treated as outlaws, is executive produced by Damon Lindelof.

* The new season of "Murder For Hire" will air on Oxygen (US) on Oct. 5, the network said. The show takes a look into the world of contract killings and shows never-before-seen footage about hired hits across the country. The premiere episode will follow the sting operation and trials of Dalia Dippolito, a 26-year-old escort, who was charged with solicitation to commit the murder of her husband.

* USA Network Inc. renewed "Queen of the South" for season five, the network announced. The show stars Alice Braga as Teresa Mendoza, a woman who is forced to run from the Mexican cartel and seek refuge in America.

* Comedy Central (US) renewed "South Side" for a 10-episode second season, The Hollywood Reported reported. "South Side" follows two friends, played by Sultan Salahuddin and Kareme Young, who work at a rent-to-own store in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago while dreaming of bigger things.

* HBO will air a four-part limited series called "Catherine the Great" on Oct. 21. Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke star in the show. HBO produced "Catherine the Great" in association with Sky Ltd. The series will be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and partners' streaming platforms.

* "Good Bones" was renewed for a fifth season by HGTV (US), Deadline reported. The new season will reportedly have 13 episodes and will premiere in the summer of 2020. "Good Bones" follows a real estate agent and new mom, and a former lawyer, as they buy crumbling Indianapolis properties and turn them into functional family homes.

Streaming

* Netflix Inc. greenlighted "Centaurworld," a children's animated series from first-time showrunner Megan Dong. The 20-episode musical comedy will be produced by Dong along with co-executive producer Dominic Bisignano, Netflix said. "Centaurworld" follows a war horse who befriends a group of magical creatures and embarks on a journey to return home.

* Netflix announced "Into the Night," its first Belgian original series, which will be directed by pair Inti Calfat and Dirk Verheye, according to a news release. The series is about preserving humanity in the wake of a cosmic disaster when the sun inexplicably starts killing everything in its path.

* Apple Inc.'s upcoming streaming service Apple TV+ pulled the plug on "Bastards," an eight-episode series starring Richard Gere, The Hollywood Reporter reported. The iPhone-maker had placed a straight-to-series order for "Bastards" last year.

* In other Netflix news, the streaming service said Hwang Dong-hyuk will produce a new Korean original series called "Round Six." The series tells the story of people who were invited to take part in a survival game with a chance to win $10 million, according to a news release.

* Netflix placed an order for a new Swedish original series titled "Love & Anarchy." The eight-part romantic dramedy follows Sofie, a career-driven consultant and married mother of two, who meets young IT tech Max while on an assignment to modernize an old publishing house, according to a news release.

* Seven new half-hour episodes of "Costume Quest" will debut on Amazon.com Inc.'s Prime Video on Oct. 11. Wow Unlimited Media Inc.'s Frederator Studios debuted season one of the"Costume Quest," its first project with Amazon Studios, earlier this year. Beginning Nov. 22, an additional 35-minute special episode of "Heroes on Holiday" will air, the company said.
