Report: Pompeo to replace Tillerson as secretary of state in coming 'weeks'

CIA Director Mike Pompeo will replace Rex Tillerson as the U.S. secretary of state in the coming "weeks," The New York Times reported.

Senior administration officials reportedly said the White House has developed a transition plan to force the former Exxon Mobil Corp. CEO out at around the end of the year or in the beginning of 2018.

President Donald Trump and Tillerson have disagreed on a number of issues, including the nuclear deal with Iran, the situation in North Korea and the clash between Arab states. Trump is ready to make a change at the State Department, though it was not immediately clear if he has approved the move, the news outlet said.

Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton would succeed Pompeo as director of the CIA, according to the transition plan developed by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly.
