Assailants threw acid on Bernhard Günther, the CFO of renewable energy developer innogy SE, in western Germany.

On March 4, Günther left his home in Düsseldorf and two men approached and poured acid over the executive. Günther was able to return to his home and call for medical help, according to The Associated Press and Bloomberg News.

The attack left Günther with serious injuries. Local police launched an investigation and are treating it as an attempted murder case. No motive for the attack has been identified.

CEO Uwe Tigges said in a March 4 statement that the company is "deeply shocked" by the assault and wish Günther a speedy recovery. The company is scheduled to report its 2017 annual report March 12.

Günther has been serving as innogy's CFO since 2016, after German utility provider RWE AG spun off its renewable energy business into its own company, according to his company biography. Günther held multiple executive positions at RWE and has been with the company since 1999.
