China's Shanxi province laid out plans to close nine more coal mines by the end of 2017, as part of its efforts to tackle oversupply in the sector, Reuters reported Oct. 14, citing government data.
The closures will account for roughly 5.25 million tonnes of coal produced annually by those mines, reflecting a commitment to suspend or slow construction of coal mines from 2016 to 2020, the report said, citing Shanxi authorities.
In 2016, the province was able to close or restructure 25 coal mines, accounting for 23.25 million tonnes of coal production capacity. In 2017, the province previously said it plans to close 18 collieries and slash 17 million tonnes of coal capacity.
