Vectren taps First Solar to build 50-MW solar facility in Indiana

Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana-South has selected First Solar Inc. to build a 50-MW solar facility in Troy, Ind., as part of the utility's long-term electric generation transition plan.

The Vectren Corp. subsidiary is working with Orion Renewable Power Resources LLC to develop the approximately 300-acre project site that would host about 150,000 solar panels, according to a March 13 release. Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana-South is known legally known as Southern Indiana Gas and Electric Co. Inc.

Construction will begin in mid-late 2019, pending approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission in the first half of 2019. The project, estimated to cost between $70 million and $75 million, is expected to go online by the end of 2020.

The generation transition plan, filed recently with Indiana regulators, would see Vectren diversify its energy mix away from coal and help the company reduce its carbon emissions by 60% below 2005 levels by 2024.

As part of the plan, Vectren proposed to build an up to 900-MW gas-fired power plant and a 50-MW solar facility to replace coal-fired generation it intends to retire, including two 245-MW units at the A.B. Brown in Posey County, Ind., and a 90-MW unit at the F.B. Culley plant in Warrick County, Ind. The company plans to relinquish its ownership stake in 150-MW Warrick unit 4 and retrofit the 270-MW coal-fired Culley unit 3.

Orion Renewable Power is a joint venture between Orion Renewable Energy Group LLC and MAP Renewable Energy.
