Landis+Gyr Group AG reported Feb. 21 that it secured 46 new smart metering and grid modernization contracts with public power utilities during 2017, increasing its service footprint in the U.S.
Wyrulec Co. in Wyoming, Pioneer Electric Cooperative Inc. in Alabama and Seattle City Light in Washington were among the public utilities to sign contracts for Landis+Gyr's smart metering technology, to replace legacy metering systems during 2017.
The activity in the public power sector mirrors ongoing projects at investor-owned utilities in North America, including with Ameren Corp., PPL Corp. and Fortis Inc. utility Tucson Electric Power Co.
Landis+Gyr said in a news release that it is halfway through completing the largest smart grid project in the world, with Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc., with plans to install 28 million advanced meters and devices by 2020, three years ahead of a previous schedule.
