ComcastCorp. unit NBCUniversal Media LLC's announced acquisition of was thetop deal of the month across the media, new media and communications sectors.
The transaction, valued at $3.80 billion, is expected toclose by the end of the year. The studio will become part of the UniversalFilmed Entertainment Group following deal completion.
The announced acquisition of TiVo Inc. by Rovi Corp. on April 29, was the second-largest deal,with a value of $1.06 billion. Combined the two companies would own over 6,000 patentsand pending applications via their R&D efforts and will have roughly 28million subscribers.
Crown CastleInternational Corp. had the top communications deal for the month,acquiring thetowers and wireless communications developer, on April 8. Ata deal value of $461 million, this was the third-largest deal announced in themeasured period.
This marks the second year in a row that Crown Castle hasparticipated in M&A activity in the month of April. However, the 2016 TowerDevelopment Corp. acquisition is less than half the value of the 2015 $1billion acquisitionof Sunesys LLC.
In communications, the April 2015 aggregate deal value fortwo deals was $2.9 billion, compared to $474 million for two transactions inApril this year.
Totals for new media and media deals for April 2015 were 15deals with an aggregate deal value of almost $2.54 billion, whereas 2016 showsan increased aggregate deal value of nearly $4.75 billion for 16 deals.
