Calpine's 828-MW Pa. combined-cycle plant starts commercial operation

Calpine Corp. said March 18 that it placed into service its 828-MW York 2 Energy Center in Peach Bottom Township, Pa.

The facility is at the site of Calpine's existing 565-MW York Energy Center. Both combined-cycle plants primarily use natural gas, but are capable of running on ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel oil to enhance reliability.

"York 2 was built and will operate cost-effectively without the need for government or public subsidies, demonstrating that letting the competitive markets work is the best way to optimize generation resources," Calpine President and CEO Thad Hill said. York 2 Energy Center's capacity cleared PJM Interconnection's base residual auctions through 2022.
