Business sentiment among Japan's big manufacturers at 11-year high

Business confidence among Japan's large manufacturers reached its highest level in 11 years in the three months to December, marking its fifth straight quarter of improvement, the Bank of Japan's Tankan survey showed.

The key index tracking large manufacturers' business sentiment rose to 25 in December from a reading of 22 in September. This marked the highest level since December 2006 when the index was also at 25, the Nikkei Asian Review reported.

Large companies across all industries said they planned to increase fixed investment by 7.4% in the year through March 2018.

Meanwhile, business sentiment among major nonmanufacturing companies was unchanged at 23.

The survey was conducted between Nov. 14 and Dec. 14, with responses from more than 10,000 companies.
