Homeland Security to employ new strategy to tackle cybersecurity risks

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security will be employing a new strategy to tackle cybersecurity risks in the U.S., according to the 35-page report reviewed by Reuters prior to its public release.

"The cyber threat landscape is shifting in real-time, and we have reached a historic turning point," DHS chief Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement. "It is clear that our cyber adversaries can now threaten the very fabric of our republic itself."

In the report, the department cited threats from a "growing set of sophisticated malicious actors who seek to exploit cyberspace."

"Motivations include espionage, political and ideological interests, and financial gain," the report stated. "Nation-states continue to present a considerable cyber threat. But non-state actors are emerging with capabilities that match those of sophisticated nation-states."

The report was released amid concerns regarding the security of the 2018 U.S. midterm congressional elections and hacking of U.S. companies.

In April, more than 30 technology and security companies, including Microsoft Corp., Facebook Inc. and Nokia Corp., signed an agreement to help protect people online and advance cybersecurity around the globe.

Also, the U.S. and U.K. governments issued a joint technical alert on April 16 warning of a Russian cyber campaign aimed at taking control of routers and other networking equipment used to transport traffic across the internet.
