De Beers ends production at Victor diamond mine in Ontario

Anglo American PLC unit De Beers SA has permanently ceased production at its Victor diamond mine in Ontario after more than 10 years of operations.

Mining activities stopped March 5 and the last economic ore was processed May 26, followed by several days of treating low-grade ore and limestone to remove any remaining diamonds. The processing plant will be shut down by the end of June.

In 2017, De Beers set aside expansion plans at Victor, which could have boosted the mine life by six years, after failing to secure support from the First Nation of Attawapiskat amid environmental issues.

De Beers said May 30 that it spent C$2.6 billion to build and operate the mine, which yielded about 8.1 million carats of diamonds as of the first quarter.
