Uber gets Pa. approval to resume autonomous car tests

Uber Technologies Inc. gained approval from the Pennsylvania government to resume autonomous vehicle testing in the state.

According to records posted on the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation website, Uber's local subsidiary UATC LLC was authorized Dec. 17 to conduct automated vehicle tests in Allegheny County.

The news comes weeks after it was reported that the ride-hailing company will soon resume the tests in Pennsylvania on a smaller scale.

Uber halted its self-driving car test program in March after one of the autonomous units hit and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Ariz.

In November, it sought permission from Pennsylvania to resume the tests on public roads after it implemented a series of changes to the program, which include having two employees in the front seat, enabling an automatic braking system and real-time monitoring of backup safety drivers.

The company has not yet resumed the tests as of Dec. 18, Reuters reported, citing a spokesperson.
