Czech president reappoints anti-establishment leader as prime minister

Czech premier Milos Zeman on June 6 reappointed Andrej Babis, the leader of the anti-establishment ANO party, as the country's prime minister and gave him a mandate to form a government, Reuters reported.

Zeman expects a new government to be appointed by the end of June, but he said Babis' effort to form a coalition with the Social Democrats hinges on the results of a vote by that party's members, which is due June 15.

The Social Democrats and ANO require parliamentary support from the far-left Communists as the two parties hold only 93 out of the lower house's 200 seats, according to the report.

Babis became prime minister in late 2017 promising to limit migration, trim taxes and eradicate corruption. But ANO lost a no-confidence vote in January and Babis is currently under investigation over the allegedly illegitimate receipt of an EU subsidy, Reuters said. That charge, and the potential involvement of the Communists in a new government, sparked protests last week by Czech citizens who feared the prospect of Babis being reappointed, according to the newswire.

Babis has denied the corruption allegation.
