Legal challenge filed against Altech Chemicals for terminating mining rights deal

said March 29 thatit received a notice of legal challenge to its previously announced terminationof the mining rights deal with Dana Shipping and Trading SA, which granted the latterthe exclusive right to mine up to 10 million tonnes of kaolin from Altech's deposit in WesternAustralia.

Early in March,Altech said it pulled outfrom the deal because the first condition of the agreement was not satisfied bythe first end date of Jan. 28, giving either of the parties the right to terminatethe agreement by issuing a notice to the other.

The companysaid it will defend its position and reiterated that it had the right to terminatethe mining rights deal in order to focus solely on its high purity alumina projectin Malaysia.
