Report: AT&T planning to drop 2G

AT&T Inc.said that it is planning to close down its 2G network by the end of 2016, WirelessWeek reported April 27.

Reportedly, AT&T has already moved 6 million of its customersoff the 2G base in the past 12 months. CFO John Stevens was cited as saying thatthe company expects to move the rest of its consumer base, though it is expecting"to see manageable pressure in the last half of the year from subscribers…choosingnot to make this migration."

The company reportedly is looking to save the cost of operatingits remaining 2G network and reaping spectrum benefits by refarming the decommissioned2G network to meet the consumer data demands.

According to Stevens, as cited by Wireless Week, the companyhas already refarmed part of its 2G network spectrum in areas where the traffichas gone down.
