European insurance indexes continue upward trend in Q3

The SNL European Insurance index recorded a total return of 25.3% in the first nine months of 2017,, according to data compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence, a performance that comes in spite of a series of natural disasters in the third quarter that threaten to weigh on insurers' results.

Whereas 2016 was a turbulent year for European insurance stocks, 2017 has so far seen an upward trend in share performance, despite recent hurricanes that hit Latin America, the Caribbean and the U.S., as well as earthquakes in Mexico.

The SNL Eastern European Insurance index — in which Poland's PZU SA represents the majority of the weighting — posted a return of 56.0% during the period, well above the other regional indexes. The SNL UK & Ireland Insurance index recorded the lowest return at 20.6%.
