Stilwell Value, affiliates to seek Wheeler REIT board representation

Wheeler Real Estate Investment Trust Inc. shareholder Stilwell Value LLC and its affiliates bought additional common shares of Wheeler and will seek to be represented on the REIT's board.

The shareholder group said in an Aug. 8 ownership filing that they bought the REIT's shares to profit from the appreciated market price of the stock by asserting shareholder rights.

Believing that the value of Wheeler's assets is not adequately reflected in the stock's current market price, the group said it will work with the REIT's board to maximize shareholder value and will oppose any additional offerings of preferred securities by the company.

Stilwell Value and its affiliates claimed beneficial ownership of 829,254 Wheeler shares, or a 9.6% stake in the REIT, according to the filing.

In July, hedge fund North Star Partners LP urged Wheeler to explore strategic alternatives, including a potential full or partial sale of the company.
