Total U.S. nuclear plant availability topped the 85% level early May 10 at 85.06%, up from 83.52% on May 9 and also much higher than the 77.92% reported on the same day in 2017.
Providing a boost to total output was the return of three units across the country.
FirstEnergy Corp.'s Beaver Valley 1 in Pennsylvania was warming up at 15% early May 10 after being taken offline on April 15 for refueling and maintenance. Public Service Enterprise Group Inc.'s Hope Creek 1 in New Jersey was at 3% early May 10 after being shut on April 13 for a refueling outage. Duke Energy Corp.'s Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant in North Carolina was at 2% early May 10 after being taken offline early April for planned seasonal work.
In addition, three other units increased output. The recently restarted Public Service Enterprise Group Inc.'s Salem 2 in New Jersey was operating at full power early May 10, climbing from 19% on May 9. Susquehanna 1 in Pennsylvania, which is owned by Riverstone Holdings LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc., saw production rise from 80% on May 9 to 93% early May 10. Tennessee Valley Authority's Sequoyah 1 in Tennessee was also pegged at 100% power early May 10, increasing from 74% on May 9.
On the other hand, NextEra Energy Inc.'s Point Beach 2 in Wisconsin saw output fall from 100% on May 9 to 70% early May 10.
As of early May 10, a total of ten units remain shut.
