EDF files for early shutdown of Fessenheim nuclear plant

Electricité de France SA said Sept. 30 that it has submitted an application with government authorities for early shutdown of its Fessenheim nuclear power plant.

The state-owned utility submitted the application after signing an agreement with the government for EDF to receive compensation for the early closure of Fessenheim. EDF said the early closure of Fessenheim is the result of "the limitation of nuclear power output set by a law passed on the 17th of August 2015, pertaining to the energy transition in support of green growth."

Under the agreement, the government will compensate EDF for a four-year period following closure of the plant for related expenses, expected to amount to nearly €400 million.

The agreement also includes subsequent payments in compensation for any loss of earnings, including income from future power generation, based on Fessenheim's previous output figures, up until 2041, according to a news release.
