South China Morning Post launches new app as Alibaba closes deal

South China Morning Post launched a new mobile app followingthe completion of Alibaba GroupHolding Ltd.'s acquisitionof the 113-year-old newspaper and its associated media assets from SCMP GroupLtd.

Alibaba'spurchase of SCMP Group's media assets received approval from the latter'sshareholders on March 14, according to an April 5 statement. Following the dealcompletion, SCMP Group Ltd. will be renamed Armada Holdings Ltd.

The dealalso includes the Sunday Morning Post,SCMP.com, Chinese websites Nanzao.com and Nanzaozhinan.com, magazines such asthe Hong Kong editions of Esquire, ELLE and Cosmopolitan, and SCMP Group'srecruitment, outdoor media, events and conferences, education and digital mediabusinesses.

The newSCMP mobile app, which offers features such as improved navigation, search andpersonalization, can be accessed for free starting April 5, while the e-paperversion as well as the print edition of SouthChina Morning Post will remain subscription-based.
