BMW sales decline in May

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG reported a sales decline in May on weakness in the Chinese and German markets.

The automaker's sales fell by 2.1% from May 2017 to 204,041 units. Lower sales in China, which dipped 10.1%, were attributed to changes in import duties. Sales in Germany declined by 13.6% owing to fewer selling days due to several bank holidays. The company's Latin America sales rose 16.0% while sales in the Americas overall increased by 5.2% during May.

During the first 5 months of the year, BMW sold more than 1 million units, a 1.6% increase from the prior-year period.

"We're particularly pleased to see that our X vehicles are more popular with our customers than ever, with record sales figures despite the lack of X3 availability in China," said BMW management board member Pieter Nota.
