National Australia Bank Ltd.'s legal proceedings against Google Inc. regarding the incorrect distribution of personal details of 60,000 of its customers via email hit a delay after the search engine giant successfully applied to push back a court hearing by two weeks, The Australian Financial Review reported Dec. 19.
Lawyers dispatched by Google asked the Northern District of California court for a two-week delay for its response to a preliminary injunction and hearing.
NAB on Dec. 6 filed a complaint against Google and a proposed summons in district court after the personal details of 60,000 clients of the bank's migrant banking division were sent to a third party via email. The emails include details such as the client's name, account number and even NAB identification number but did not include passwords. It is believed that an incorrect email address was entered and the mistake was subsequently repeated 60,000 times.
The error forced the bank to take legal action against Google to help it get to the bottom of the incident. Google has strict guidelines that prevent third parties from accessing Gmail account details and requires a court order for such information.
NAB has not clarified when the emails were sent. The bank is seeking the owner of the email address to whom the client information was sent.
Google is now expected to respond to the motion for preliminary injunction Jan. 6 and to respond to the complaint by Jan. 13.
