Va. coal exports decrease 2% YOY in December 2018, maintain November's levels

Coal exports from the Hampton Roads port facilities in Virginia decreased 2% year over year to 3.1 million tons in December 2018 and increased by 0.4% from November's total, according to data provided by the Virginia Maritime Association Jan. 7.

At Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Lamberts Point facility, which primarily handles metallurgical coal, coal exports reached 1.3 million tons in December, up 0.8% from the total delivered in the year-ago period.

Kinder Morgan Inc.'s Pier IX facility, which mostly handles thermal coal, increased 17.8% year over year to 625,706 tons of coal, compared to 531,251 tons in December 2017.

Dominion Terminal Associates LLP, owned by coal producers Contura Energy Inc. and Arch Coal Inc., saw its coal exports decline 11.8% year over year to roughly 1.2 million tons.
