Report: Japan to tighten anti-money laundering guidelines

Japan's Financial Services Agency plans to implement more stringent anti-money laundering guidelines as early as January 2018, The Nikkei reported Dec. 7.

Under the new guidelines, banks and cooperative regional financial institutions will be required to seek more information from customers suspected of illegal activity, the report said. Currently, these institutions do not have a legal obligation to scrutinize suspected illegal activities of customers.
